substance knife textures lessons

 textures on substance

(good websites-Go on textureninja.com and texture.com) substance sampler is also good

-black and white filter don't texture

-White is alpha. Black will be lost on black masks.

-any detail needs to be white.

-use levels and curves to make the image darker

-make sure white is not blurred out

-designs are like stencils, don't need tiling

-1024 is best size or 2 by 2 grid

-mirror in reverse and clone stamp tool to blend

-name textures simply

-height detail/maps is difficult with stencil

-can layer textures to look like others (metal rust for paint chipping to mud grains)

-better to bake textures

-on a knife scratches a te top is realistic, but everywhere is unrealistic

-rust is also good for dust dust is usually on top, not on side and underneath

-changing stroke and flow will change opacity

-jitter detects brush use and randomizes detail like mud

-to custom brush in substance make white shapes and stamp as alpha

-can mix and match textures

-flatten image to keep adjustments settings with selection tool on Photoshop

- save textures as png

-remove border from textures, as it will pick up as detail

-darker metal first than lighter metal

-add black mask to silver in substance

-stencil in substance

-stencil will bring box over the top will do faint detail

-image wont scale, but can scale model

-inverting helps when detail is darker than background

-can drag texture to substance library

- hold 's' + right click or left click can rotate and scale image, but better to scale model

-projection is better for logos than scales

-for projection use base colour

-stencil translates light and dark as alpha

-can use stencil for height detail

-alt +click on image for cloning tool

-cloning tool stops repetition of flipped textures

-dont make own chainmail textures

-custom brushes better than stencils for height detail
