Reflective statement final

Throughout this Major project, I have gone through a period of growth both practically and conceptually. From the work I produced on my Minor project, the logical choice was to build on those foundations to cement an animated short (UCA description- “Your final films should be fully textured with a level of animation used throughout, whether that is through characters or environment assets you decided on through the minor project. Post-processing effects and lighting should also be used to fully realise your final films.”).  To recap, my Minor project was A STORY about a stubborn 7-year-old Boy refusing to willingly move into a new family home. However, when they arrived he befriended a Female neighbour of the same age.  I had completed the concept art, script, storyboard, animatic, and basic story character animation (UCA description- “Why ‘Animated Short’. This is simply a way of saying ‘include time-based’ work. The amount of animation in is dictated by the type of ...

Major final animation

This is it, the final animation, the culmination of all these months and blog posts. There was a slight hesitation on "WHEN" to post it leading up to it due to rendering times, but as it's complete and there's no reason to add extra stress and upload it on the last day, which is the 18th of May, I'll upload it now. Reacting to the animation, I'm quite proud of how far I've come from the previz. During the previz stage, I was unaware of Substance Painter and how much it could do for me. I was also unaware of After Effects, as I prioritized Adobe Premiere above it. However, I have found After Effects more user-friendly and powerful, regardless of my prior history with other editing software. As displayed in my blog posts by me, I did have to look at Youtube for help, and I was honest with that to help me improve on unfamiliar equipment.

Major finishing Art Of

Image
This would be the final image of my Art Of. My reflective statement will be a blog post, so it will be on a separate document. This image explains my progress through feedback and applying them to the last scenes of my story, not chronologically, but refinement-wise.

Major LG new stop redone

Image
This is the genral theme of this scene, with the lips and eylashes. Now I am on to the animating.

Major voices by Mary graphic

Image
This is the graphic that I mentioned before, now realized. Even though I know who Mary is, I have labelled Mary's connection to myself to keep consistent with my theme of elaborating for new viewers and audiences.

Major creating a separate graphic to tribute the voice actor

Previous I was thinking to ‘fit’ the voice actor’s name into the end credits, but spontaneity occurred and I want a blank graphic of them like a silhouette and the characters in small circles with voiced by in large captials. This will probably be at the beginning maybe so the impact of the title only happening once is more important.  Audiences will see a preview of other characters and ask why they are important, so this will increase anticipation towards the characters and overall storyline.

Major preparing for reflective statement

I might start writing some of the reflection now to add to later on

Major including credits

As I did actually use a voice actor, I will include the credits and credits that the music came from YouTube

Major eyelashes done for new LG skip, now to animate

Image
I have added the eyelashes, and now I will put the scenes together for animation, I really like the colours and tones, so here is a possibility I might not have to colour correct in After Effects.

Major process of lips on LG new skip

Image
(with lips) (without lips) Though I still need to add the eyelashes once the remaining lips are done, I'm quite pleased on how it is going. It did go over my expected finish time of Friday, but I knew it was unrealistic, purely because my previous scenes did not have a one-day deadline either.

Major adding finishing touches to last scene

Image
(skip scene) (stop scene)  I need to add her lips to this scene above, to be able to place it in my final video. As, I prefer working at University due to more storage space, doing this by Tuesday at the latest would work, although I am planning to do the lips before this upcoming Friday.

Major saturating down LG pick up toy tones

Image
This image is very strong and is consistent with a blue and red theme, which really benefits the LG model. However, the contrast is not strong enough and I feel it could be further improved in After Effects for the main fact that even some of  LG's hands get lost in the red lighting. This image is toned down and subtly highlights the prominence of the color Purple, as everything that is 'not' Purple is monotone (greyscale). This is a film technique I wanted to apply to hint further foreshadow the importance of this toy by extracting its colors further into the frame.

Major listing for song tracks

Image
Though I already know the songs I am using, they were only saved to one device, so documenting them here makes it easier to refind them when using other devices.

major comparison between original and new LG happy with toy scene

Image
This is the original scene and it was a still. It captures interest in the toy by LG, but it could be animated and more centred as she's kind of to the left.  This is the improved scene. It still has to go into After Effects once I add the eyelashes on, but this is 80% there, 10% is eyelashes and the other 10% is colour grading if necessary in After Effects. If you notice, there is not a smooth curve animation, there are breaks where the girl appreciates the toy more as it eventually gets closer to her face/eyes. this is done, so it is easier to adjust the length to 10 seconds, and also to break up 'predictableness' that would be with a smooth curve in this scene.  This is the After Effects version, which I like because how it really sharpens the colours used by having contrasting colors make them pop out more.

Major redoing LG happy with toy scene

Image
I wanted a purple background to amplify  the atmosphere/aura of the Purple Gauntlet iconography. I did Purple lighting as if the toy is glowing on the face of the LG (Little Girl).    Though I was in favor with the Purple Lighting, I wanted darker areas to bring down the image a bit more, and more clearly show how strong the Purple lighting is compared to normal dark shadows.  This is using the lighting from the image above, just with the textures applied. The shadows add richness and more importance the darkness to the toy make the shapes of the toy sharper and the darker areas make the lighter highlights more important to understanding a potential light source.

Major editing notes

As the only scenes i;m focusing on is the LG sequences in blue and red lighting, I have to remember to cut the original part out instead of remaking the whole sequences of my story again as they worked well together. This also means I will need to intentionally match the length of the original for the audio o no feel rushed or exaggerated.
